"Q: When you think back to a familiar table that you sat at as a child.. what comes back to you?
A: My mom and dad’s. We ate all our meals around the kitchen table. I love the memories. I want my kids to feel the same about their growing up years"
Heather has been an avid supporter of all my innovation, patiently sitting through my very first live streams, enthusiastically cheering me on, and jumping in when I offered my first “bye-bye boredom, hello delicious” one pot meal live-stream adventure on Facebook in 2017. Perhaps it’s the teacher in her, or the mom in her, but she encourages me to show up, try new things, grow and I cherish her for it. Her hubby is a doctor; together, they raise 3 gorgeous children, and they sit down to a from-scratch meal every night. Perhaps we all can learn a thing or two about this gesture of love that means so much to her.
Heather is passing along her sense of family and belonging to her children. She shares photos of them and her cooking heritage. I ask her
Q: What age were you when you remember cooking or baking your first dish, and what was it?
A: Maybe 10 - baking cookies with my mom. I watched my mom cook and bake since I was born 😁
Q: How old are you now?
A: 38 😊
Q: Who influenced you as a cook or baker?
A: My mom, kids and husband
Q: Someday's prepping food seems like too much. Describe those days and why it feels that way?
A: I should do a meal plan and the grocery shopping and meal prep would be a lot easier. With a young family time is a key. Just wish I had a magic wand 😊
Q: Describe one of your current favourite foods / dishes and why you love it?
A: Lunch - “egg salad” actually made from chickpeas. It's a quick and healthy lunch option. Supper - anything bbq...wishing for summer weather ☀️
Q: Describe a ritual /habit when you prep your weeknight meal?
A: I guess I like to get all the ingredients out on the counter and ready before I start (I've never thought of it as a ritual or habit but it's something I do)
Q: If someone close to you were asked what food they remember you by, what do you think it would be?
A: Home cooked meals 😊
Q: Describe some of the places you've travelled and what foods of the region stand out in your memory?
A: Europeon countries and the various sausages. Also Hawaii and a pig roasted in an underground fire pit.
Q: Describe something that you think might be unique about you as you grew up?
A: My mom cooked every meal and made every baked goodie and bread type item we ate. We went out for ice cream maybe once or twice in the summer (it was a huge treat).
Q: If you could share a life lesson with your younger self, what would it be?
A: Live every day to its fullest
Q: If you could bring back someone who is gone, and eat one meal with them, what would it be, and who would it be with?
A: It’s a tie... my grandma and my aunt. They were both fabulous cooks with a creative flare. It would definitely be Christmas dinner 💕
Q: When you think back to a familiar table that you sat at as a child, what comes back to you?
A: My mom and dad’s. We ate all meals around our kitchen table. I love the memories. I want my kids to feel the same about their growing up years ❤️
